Chanute, Kansas

Sylvia Kay (Wilson) Umbarger, 76, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away on April 1, 2026, at The University of Kansas Medical Center. Born to Charles Wilson and Katherine (Powell) Wilson on July 18, 1949, in Chanute, Kansas, Sylvia’s life was marked by dedication, love, and an enduring spirit.

A proud graduate of Chanute High School, Sylvia pursued her passion for nursing at Neosho County Community College, where she earned her Nursing degree. Her commitment to caring for others led her to a distinguished career as a registered nurse. Sylvia served with compassion and expertise under Dr. Burkman, worked for the County Health Department and also Ashley Clinic, always placing her patients' well-being at the forefront.

She was united in marriage to Ronald Umbarger on May 5, 1973, enjoying the journey and love they shared for almost 53 years.

Sylvia’s vibrant personality shone brightly beyond her professional life. Known fondly as one of the “Mouthy Mothers,” her passionate support at sporting events was well recognized, so much so that it once led to her being asked to leave a game. She deeply loved her children and took great pride in being a nurturing second “Mom” to many of her children’s friends. Her heart found joy in her immaculate flower garden and beautifully tended landscaping, reflecting her care and attention. She treasured the days spent bass fishing with Ron, relished reading Romance Novels, and credited her remarkable toughness to growing up as the only girl among six brothers.

Sylvia is lovingly survived by Ron, the children she cherished: Melissa Tarbet, Kurt Umbarger, Todd (Charlotte) Umbarger, and Chris (Kim) Umbarger, all of Chanute, Kansas. She also leaves behind one brother, Jim Wilson of Chanute, Kansas; her treasured grandchildren, Abby, Erin, Paige, Keisha, Andrea, Kyler, Kaley, Kristin, Matthew, Mitchell, and Sarah; along with numerous great-grandchildren who carry on her legacy.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Kenneth, Donnie, Dwayne, Rick, and Kevin Wilson.
