Randy L. Wagoner, 61, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma formerly of Cherryvale, Kansas passed away Monday, June 15, 2020 at Ascension St. John Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville.
Randy Lee Wagoner was born October 13, 1958 in Denver, Colorado the son of Neal and Helen (Anderson) Wagoner.
On March 31, 1984 in Cherryvale, Kansas he was united in marriage to Teresa (Terri) Driskel and she survives at the home.
A 1976 Cherryvale High School graduate, Wagoner later attended Independence Community College and Ottawa University, where he was a member of the football programs at both institutions. He returned to his hometown in mid-1980s after getting his start in teaching at Altoona-Midway High School. He was a teacher, principal and superintendent in Cherryvale until his retirement in 2015. During his 30 years in Cherryvale, Wagoner also served stints as a high school football and track coach. He was also nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year. Among his highlights during his tenure as superintendent was the merger between the Cherryvale and Thayer school districts.
Randy and his wife, Terri, moved to Bartlesville in 2017. Following his retirement from Cherryvale schools in 2015, Wagoner found a second career in the Bartlesville school system as a director of the SOAR (Students Opportunity to Adjust and Recover) Program at Jane Phillips Elementary School. He was named the school’s classified staff member of the year for 2019-20 and was nominated as Bartlesville Public School’s Classified Employee of the Year.
He holds the distinction of having the most years of service as a Cherryvale city councilor. He was elected as mayor of the then-city commission in the early 1990s and was re-elected to several terms. After being defeated for re-election in 1999, Wagoner returned to the council table in 2007 and remained with the governing body until his departure in June 2017.
He was a member of the New Life Praise and Worship Church in Cherryvale, Cherryvale Fire Department and International House of Prayer in Bartlesville.
When he was not working, he enjoyed shooting, tending his chickens and rabbits, woodworking, doing projects with his son, talking with his daughters Candace and Chelsie. He really cherished his time with wife and playing with his two grandkids.
Randy, “Bop”, “Billy”, “pops”: all nicknames he gained from those of which he had such impact on.
