Michael "Mike" Leroy Lain

Michael "Mike" LeRoy Lain, 74, passed away on June 20, 2024 in Cherryvale, Kansas.

He was born in Chanute, Kansas on September 27, 1949, to Betty Louise (Wells) Lain and Orville Ernest Lain. A man of many talents and interests, Mike graduated from Cherryvale High School in 1967 and furthered his education at Independence Community College. He also attended Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. In his free time, he enjoyed watching westerns, coaching football at Cherryvale middle school & high school, golfing, bowling, playing slow-pitch softball, and supporting the Chicago Bears. In his younger years, he received the nickname "Night train Lain".

On April 3, 1982, in Cherryvale, Kansas he was united in marriage to Leza New and to this union a daughter was born, Amber Lain.

Mike led a fulfilling life dedicated to hard work and service. He was a Pressman/Printer at Vallis until its closure and later served as a custodian at USD #447 until his well-deserved retirement on May 16, 2012. 

Throughout his life, Mike cherished his family and friends. He is survived by his loving daughter, Amber McFarland and son-in-law Ryan McFarland of Emporia, Kansas; caring brother Steve Lain and sister-in-law Janet Lain of Cherryvale; dear sister Linda Newland of Wichita; brother-in-law Larry Newland of Wichita; stepsister Connie Jewett of Cherryvale; stepsister Mary Ann Kolb of Rural Independence; 2 grandsons, Jace & Justin McFarland of Emporia and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and stepsister, Jackie Wood.

Mike will be fondly remembered for his dedication to work, love for sports, and unwavering support for his family. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Cremation has taken place and per his wishes no services will be planned.

Memorial remembrances are suggested to the Cherryvale Alumni Association and they may be left or mailed to Wickham Family Funeral Home, 216 East 4th, Cherryvale, Kansas 67335
