Mary Nell (Evans) Speaks, 92 passed away on Saturday May 17, 2025, at the Morningstar Care Home in Fredonia, Kansas. She was born on August 4, 1932, in Lyons, Kansas, to David and Loubelle (Groat) Evans.

Mary Nell was a graduate of the Fredonia High School Class of 1950. On September 9, 1950, Mary Nell Evans, was united in marriage to Gene Speaks in Lyndon Kansas. They were married for 58 years, until Gene passed away on March 2, 2009.

Mary Nell worked as an assistant for Dr. Rindt for many years and also was a homemaker. Mary Nell was a member of the Fredonia United Methodist Church.

Mary Nell was a simple lady whose love for reading brought joy and knowledge into her life.  She was adored by those who knew her, and best known for making a "mean cherry pie".

She is survived by her son, David F. Speaks, residing in Fredonia, Kansas. Mary Nell is preceded in death by her husband, Gene, and their son, Roger, her parents, David and Loubelle Evans, also her siblings, Ivan and John Evans, Edith Hatcher, Ruth Watts, and Jeanne Boss.

Cremation has taken place, and a private memorial service will be held at a later date, with burial at the Fredonia City Cemetery.

Memorial remembrances can be made to the Fredonia Public Library or can be mailed or left at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 510 N. 7th St in Fredonia.
