Mary Jane Schicke, 86, of Independence, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Credo Senior Living in Independence.

She was born on July 14, 1940, in Independence, Kansas, to Frank P. Schicke and Myrtle E. (Maher) Schicke.

Mary Jane lived a life devoted to education, hard work, and service to others. She attended St. Andrews Catholic School in Independence and St. Patrick’s High School in Parsons before graduating as valedictorian from Independence High School in 1958. She continued her education at Independence Community College, where she graduated as co-valedictorian in 1960.

Mary Jane began her career with Electra Manufacturing Company, where she worked from June 1959 until September 1964. She then joined Automotive Controls Corporation in September 1964 and remained with the company for 31 years, retiring as a senior accountant at the end of 1955. Her dedication to serving others continued through her work with USD 446 as a Title 1 paraprofessional for math at Washington School. She retired from the school district in May of 2005.

Mary Jane was a devoted member of St. Andrews Catholic Church, St. Anne's Quilters, and the Alter Society. She had previously served on the board of the St. Andrews School Foundation.

Mary Jane will be lovingly remembered by her nephew, Steve Schicke and his wife Lauri; her sister, Kathy Smith and husband Fred of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Ann Schicke; and her brother, James Schicke of Independence, Kansas. She also leaves behind many cherished memories shared with those who knew and loved her. She mothered and nurtured many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank P. Schicke and Myrtle E. (Maher) Schicke; her brothers, John Schicke and Michael Schicke; and her nieces, Samantha Clark and Laurie Schicke.

Mary Jane’s life was defined by her accomplishments, dedication, and genuine care for others. Her memory will remain a blessing to her family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Graveside services will be held 10:00 A.M., Monday, September 21, 2026, at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Independence with Father Zachary Pinaire, celebrant.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrews Catholic School and may be left with the funeral home.
