Lilly Pearl Cheever, a devoted caregiver and beloved family matriarch, passed away at her home on October 13, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on April 22, 1934, in Fontana, Kansas, Lilly was a graduate of Elk Falls, class of 1951. Throughout her long and fulfilling career, she worked as a caregiver, nurse's aide, and cook at various hospitals and nursing homes, where she demonstrated her commitment to kindness and compassion toward others.
Lilly's nurturing spirit extended beyond her professional life. She was deeply involved in her community, volunteering at schools and nursing homes, which showcased her unwavering dedication to helping those around her. She was known for her love of crocheting and quilting and spent many joyful hours bowling. A passionate sports fan, she enthusiastically supported the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs. Lilly was a member of the Quilting Guild in Eureka and was also a Girl Scout leader.
Lilly married Larry Cheever Sr. in 1960, in Miami Oklahoma, they were later divorced, and he preceded her in death in June of 1996.
Lilly is survived by her children, Chuck Yarbrough of Blaire, NE; Velma Yarbrough of El Dorado, KS; Larry Cheever Jr. of Eureka, KS; Brenda Freisner of Gridley, KS; Teresa Gulick of Yates Center, KS; and Zeke Cheever of Emporia, KS. She also leaves behind her siblings, Karen Meyer of Haysville, KS, and Linda Simons of Toronto, KS. Lilly's legacy continues through her 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, along with many adopted children and grandchildren who cherished her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Enos and Ollie Smith VanRoyen, and her sisters, Esther Meyer, Alma Boardman, and Glenice Chastain. Lilly also mourned the loss of her son, Robert Cheever, and granddaughter, Crystel Jones, who were dear to her heart.
Lilly Pearl Cheever will be remembered for her warm heart, strong spirit, and the many lives she touched throughout her journey. Her contributions to her family, friends, and community will forever be cherished, and she will be deeply missed.
Cremation has taken place, with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. Wickham Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 510 N. 7th St. Fredonia, Kansas 66736 is in charge of arrangements.
