Leo Nelson Young, age 67, gained his wings and lost his battle to COPD on July 27th 2025. He was surrounded by his daughter and grandchildren. Leo was born April 25th, 1958, to Georgia (Colston) and Jerry Young in Chanute, Kansas, where he was raised. He graduated from Chanute High School in 1976.
He joined the US Air Force in 1977, becoming a Sergeant of the 12th Tactical Intelligence Squadron at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Texas. Where he married his first wife, Shirley, and they later divorced. Leo returned to his hometown and became a certified Electronics Technician in 1995. He put his skills to use working many years for John Deere in Coffeville, Kansas.
In 1997 he married Pamela Underwood, gaining a daughter and a son. He was widowed in 2019 when his wife lost her battle to cancer.
Leo was a member of the Boys Town Club, the Elks Lodge, and a Cub Scout leader for many years. Leo was a kind, gentle soul, always laughing and smiling. He was an amazing dad and awesome papa to his grandkids. He loved camping, fishing, and photography. He also loved spending time with friends and family.
Leo is survived by his daughter, Rebecca, and her husband, Russell Carson, of the home, son Jacob and his wife Crystal Carpenter of Humboldt, Kansas. 5 grandchildren, Mariah Carpenter of Chanute, Jaliyah and her husband Trenton McIntire of Chanute, Ethan and his wife Ashley Hamlin of Chanute, Aiden and Haylen Koch of Chanute and 4 great- grandchildren, Kaysn, Silas, Charles and Kingston all of Chanute, and many nieces and nephews.
Leo is preceded in death by his parents, Georgia and Jerry Young, 3 brothers, Jerry Jr., Paul, and Mike Young, and a sister, Connie Goss. Leo was very loved and will be dearly missed.
Services will be held at Chanute Church of the Nazarene on August 9th at 10:00 AM.
