Kenneth Eugene Johnson

Kenneth Eugene Johnson was born on August 29, 1925, to Emery and Edna (Morgan) Johnson. He passed away peacefully on August 9, 2026, just shy of his 101st birthday. Kenneth led a life defined by resilience, hard work, and profound dedication to his family, community, and passions.

Kenneth proudly served his country in the US Navy, a commitment that reflected the sense of duty and steadfast character he carried throughout his entire life. After his service, Kenneth dedicated many years to his work, taking on roles at Johnson & Son Lumber in Erie, the Erie Grain Elevator, Page Milk Company, and an oil field pumper with his brother, Donald L Johnson. His tireless labor and unwavering reliability in these positions were a testament to his strong work ethic and his commitment to providing for those he loved.

He was united in marriage to Marilyn (Barnhardt) on May 1947, in Oswego, Kansas. Though later divorced

Kenneth was known for his zest for life and simple joys. He found great delight in searching for treasures at garage sales and cherished daily coffee with his buddies, where camaraderie was as rich as the brew. Wrestling on TV and classic old westerns brought him entertainment and relaxation, offering a window into worlds of grit and tenacity that paralleled his own.

One of Kenneth’s remarkable skills was his talent for rebuilding small engines; he truly could make anything run, a talent that endeared him to family, friends, and neighbors alike. Together with his brother, he shared a love of racing stock cars, creating memories on and off the track that would last a lifetime.

Kenneth’s life was shaped and enriched by those he loved and who now carry forth his memory. He is survived by his children, Marion Scott Johnson and David Layne Johnson; his grandchildren, Ryan Mitchell Johnson and Brett Tyler Johnson; and his great-grandchild, Silas Layne Johnson. Their lives reflect Kenneth’s enduring influence and the values he lived by.

He is preceded in death by his father, Emery Johnson; his mother, Edna (Morgan) Johnson; his brother, Donald L Johnson; and his infant child, James Eugene Johnson. Kenneth’s legacy is further honored by their memories, carried on through stories shared and lessons passed down.

Kenneth Eugene Johnson leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories, a lifetime of hard work, laughter among friends, devotion to family, and hands that could fix just about anything. His spirit will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A Celebration of Life Graveside Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at East Hill Cemetery, Erie, Kansas. Military Honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard Post 102, Erie, Kansas.

Services are under the personal care of Wickham Family Funeral Home, 500 North Forest Ave. Chanute, Kansas.
