Julia M. Monical, age 95, a long-time resident of Fredonia, KS, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2015. She was residing at Golden Living Center in Anderson, Mo. at the time of her death. Julia was born March 17, 1920 in Chanute, KS to Louis F. and Sarah E. (West) Elling. She graduated high school in Purcell, OK. In May of 1939 she married Kenneth E. Monical in Chanute, KS. They settled in Fredonia and had two daughters, Patricia G. Coates and Peggy L. (Mike) Daniels. Julia was active in the First Christian Church, where she had been a lifelong member. She loved working the Thrift Store and especially enjoyed finding great bargains. She worked alongside her husband in the family grocery business for many years and also at Fredonia Floral. At one time, she also managed the Senior Center and did Meals on Wheels. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her greatest goal in life was to provide a loving, caring home for her family. She was talented at many crafts, including painting, knitting, embroidery and crocheting. She loved to work crossword puzzles and enjoyed playing cards with her friends. Julia was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, her parents, two brothers, Jim and Leonard Elling and a half-brother, D'Arcy West. Survivors include her daughters, Patty and Peggy; 6 grandchildren: Russell (Joyce) Wing; Pamela (Kevin) Cox; Kristine (John) McLarty; Jason Coates; John (Kelly) Hughes and Jim (Kristi) Hughes; 14 great-grandchildren: Garrett Cox; Preston Cox; Morgan Cox; Tyler Cox; Ryan Wing; Kyle Wing; Casey Wing; Aaron McLarty; Amy McLarty; Sarah McLarty; Becky Hughes; Josh Hughes; Kelsey Hughes; and Danielle Hughes Hernandez; 8 great-great-grandchildren: Natalie Wing; Dawson Glore; Garrett Cox, Jr.; Aiden Hughes; Addison Hughes; Melanie Lewis; Braxton Parker and Kaiden Hernandez. Also several nieces and nephews. The family of Julia Monical entrusted her cremation and other arrangements to Timmons Funeral Home. A private family memorial service will be held at Fredonia Cemetery on Saturday, October 17, 2015. The family will receive friends at the First Christian Church on Saturday afternoon, 2:00 P.M.-4:00P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
