John Michael "Mike" Reid, 80, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away on October 21, 2026.
Born on May 31, 1946, in Lawton, Oklahoma, Mike was the son of Patrick Conrad and Clara Maurine (Shadel) Reid. His father, a captain in the U.S. Army, was killed during the Korean War and posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
Growing up in Sabetha, Kansas, Mike enjoyed the closeness of family, a tight-knit group of friends, and a strong sense of community. He developed a love for sports and was also active in Boy Scouts. After graduating from Sabetha High School in 1964, he attended Emporia State University (Kansas State Teachers College), where he played basketball and earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1969.
On August 10, 1968, Mike married Cheryl Beth Tidwell at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Caldwell, Kansas. Mike and Cheryl shared 58 years of marriage, raising three children and treasuring their family and the many special friendships they enjoyed throughout their life together.
His professional career began in education, teaching physical education and health in Yates Center, Kansas, from 1969 to 1973. During that time, he also coached football, basketball, and track.
In 1974, Mike joined Home Savings Association and moved to Chanute. Over the years, he held several leadership positions and was active in the Kansas banking industry. He served as Chairman of the Board for both the Kansas Savings and Loan League and the Heartland Community Bankers Association. In recognition of his years of service, he was honored by the Kansas Bankers Association for 50 years in banking.
Serving his community was important to Mike. He generously gave his time to the Chanute School Board, Chanute Housing Authority, Tri-Valley Developmental Services, Tri-Valley Foundation, and Neosho County Community College Foundation. He also taught classes at Neosho County Community College and received recognition for his community service from the Chanute Chamber of Commerce and Tri-Valley Developmental Services.
Mike's Catholic faith was an important part of his life. He was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he served on various parish councils and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Throughout his childhood and adult life, he was gifted with mentors and role models who lovingly guided and supported him. He was deeply grateful for their influence and, in turn, made it a priority to show that same generosity and offer guidance and encouragement to others, especially those going through difficult times.
Mike enjoyed being outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, cutting wood, or simply taking a drive through the countryside. Family trips to Colorado, filled with skiing and summer adventures, became a favorite tradition. He especially loved attending his children's and grandchildren's activities and supporting them in whatever they pursued. He loved sharing his favorite pastimes with them and passing along life lessons and pearls of wisdom.
Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Mike loved teasing family and friends and giving them nicknames. His good-natured teasing was often a sign of affection, and he rarely missed an opportunity to share a story, tell a joke, or make someone laugh.
Mike is survived by his wife, Cheryl Reid of Chanute; his children, Amy Pavlik and husband Jerry, Megan Reid, and Matt Reid and wife D.Dee; and his grandchildren, Cade, Halle, and Jase Pavlik, and Bella, Miller, Sutton, and Blythe Reid. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Harold Barrett; his brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Linda Reid; and many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Patricia Herrmann; his brother-in-law, Steve Herrmann; and his niece, Erin Barrett.
A rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 30, at 11:00 a.m. Both services will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chanute, Kansas. Mike’s family wishes to extend a special note of gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Credo Memory Care and Credo Assisted Living. God's abundant love was ever-present in the compassionate care they provided to him and the kindness they showed his family.
