Jim Allen Hockett, a cherished husband, father, son, and brother, departed this world on February 23, 2026, in Cherryvale, Kansas, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in love, laughter, and hard work.
Born on March 13, 1973, in Sedan, Kansas, the son of Jimmy Ray Hockett and Patricia Vernon Hockett. He attended Caney Valley schools, developing not only the skills that would serve him well in his career as a carpenter and contractor but also a kind and welcoming personality. Known for his onery yet generous demeanor and an infectious sense of humor, Jim had a unique way of brightening the lives of those he encountered. His friendships were treasures, forged from shared laughter and the simple joy of togetherness.
Professionally, Jim's hands were skilled and versatile. He worked as a self-employed contractor and Culligan in Independence. He was currently working for Bay Ltd. at the Refinery in Coffeyville, Kansas. His dedication allowed him to build not just things, but lasting relationships—he could quite literally construct anything, his talent unmatched and his commitment unwavering.
In the heart of his life was his beloved family. Jim married Bonnie Cannon on February 26, 1993, in Miami, Oklahoma. Together, they cultivated a family that Jim was endlessly proud of, they were his proudest accomplishment. He was a devoted father to his sons, Nick (Hanna) Hockett of Caney and Cody (Madi) Hockett of Tyro, and a loving grandfather to his adored grandchildren: Karsyn, Turk, Rowen, Ryder, Ryverli, and Reini. Jim also held dear his mother, Patricia Lumley, and his brother, Clayton (Sandy) Hockett, both residents of Caney, Kansas. He cherished many cousins, adopted children and grandchildren, and friends who filled his life with joy and companionship.
Jim's love for adventure found its expression through hobbies that brought him close to friends and family. He spent countless days fishing, camping, and riding side by side (buggy) with his loved ones, creating memories that would linger long after those sunny afternoons faded into dusk.
As we gather in celebration of his life, we will remember the man who possessed an extraordinary ability to make others smile, who could craft nearly anything with his hands, and who regarded his family with profound pride. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Ray Hockett, his stepfather, Ed Lumley, mother-in-law, Elizabeth Tattershall, and dear family members including Aunt Babara Riner and Terry Vernon.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Cherryvale Community Center, located at 712 South Liberty Street, Cherryvale, KS 67335. There, his family and friends will gather to share stories, laughter, and love in honor of a remarkable man who left an indelible mark on their hearts.
