James L. Schoenberger, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026, at Heritage Health Care in Chanute, Kansas, at the age of 80. He was born April 30, 1945, in Marysville, Kansas, to Albert and Mary Ellen (Rosengarden) Schoenberger.
Jim was a proud graduate of Marysville High School, class of 1963, and went on to further his education at Coffeyville Community College. His career as an Engineer Draftsman took him from Allis-Chalmers in Topeka, Kansas, to Peerless Trailer Corporation in Paragould, Arkansas, and then to GEO Churchill in Chanute. Jim retired from HBD Industries, where his keen mind and attention to detail contributed greatly to his various roles there.
He was united in marriage to Deanne Kaump on May 28, 1966, in Topeka, Kansas. They celebrated nearly 59 years of marriage. They loved to travel, especially on cruises, going to antique shops, feeding the neighborhood songbirds, and going for walks with the family Schnauzer.
He was not just defined by his hard work ethic; Jim was a vibrant spirit who brought joy and laughter into every room. Known for his fun-loving personality, he was truly the life of the party. His infectious smile and laughter created an atmosphere of warmth and happiness. Above all, Jim cherished his family, instilling in them the importance of love, faith, and community. A devoted Christian, he was a current member of Otterbein Community Church and had previously been part of First United Methodist Church. He was very active in church, sang in the choir, maintained the building and grounds, and shared his faith and witnessed to others about Jesus.
Jim's interests were varied and enriching. He found joy in fishing, collecting toys, and attending car shows. His love for sports was particularly evident as he could easily be heard supporting his sons and grandchildren at their sporting events and finding great happiness in their achievements. Whether participating in sports himself, especially racquetball and pickleball, or cheering from the sidelines, Jim was a steadfast supporter of his family and friends.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Deanne (Kaump) Schoenberger, of the home, as well as his sons, Jeff (Jenny) Schoenberger of Chanute, and Scott (Cheryl) Schoenberger of Baldwin City. He also leaves behind his brother, Tom (Becky) Schoenberger of Marysville, Kansas, brother-in-law, Dennis Kaump of Concord, California, and a cherished legacy of grandchildren, Jordan (Brendan) Hatfield, Drew Schoenberger, Jalynn (Devon) Richardson, Alexia (Chad) Berg, Jayci (Drew) Fauth, Mason Vietti, and Leo Schoenberger, and also great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Wells, Brooks, Shay, and Lori. Additionally, he is remembered fondly by nephews, Jess (Leslie) Schoenberger and family, Jake (Tiffani) Schoenberger and family, niece, Kate (Bryce) Hedke and family, and many friends made throughout the years.
Preceding Jim in death were his parents and his brother, Jerry.
