Gilbert A. Ferguson

Gilbert Alan Ferguson, a resident of Fredonia, passed away peacefully at age 91 on June 24, 2020 at Heritage Health Center in Chanute.
Gilbert was born on October 8, 1928 in Toronto, Kansas to James Henderson and Anna Mary (Senn) Ferguson. He was the youngest of six children.
On June 26, 1960 he married Martha Jane Lewis at the Quincy Methodist Church. For nearly sixty years the journey of Lewis and Ferguson has been a blessed and happy one. He is survived by his wife, Jane; his son, Alan, and wife, Elaine Ferguson of Peoria, IL; and two grandchildren, Melissa and Matthew. He was preceded in death by his parents, along with siblings Alexander, Alfred, Elizabeth, Carroll, Paul, and grandson Ryan.
Gilbert graduated from Toronto High School in 1946. He worked in the local grocery store and movie theater until he enlisted in the Navy in 1948. He served as a Naval radio operator on the U.S. Coral Sea aircraft carrier and at Navy bases in the U.S., Panama, and the Mediterranean. After leaving the Navy in 1952, he began working for the local telephone company. He worked for 38 years installing and servicing telephones in Fredonia and surrounding towns in southeast Kansas.
He retired from Sprint Telephone in 1990. During retirement he enjoyed daily coffee with the guys and collecting antique telephones, radios, and vinyl records. Gilbert enjoyed reading; he was always ready to share a good story or a bit of humor. From 1975 until 2005, Gilbert and Jane owned and operated QuinCraft Products, the makers of the Atom Pop popcorn popper.
His was a life of service as he enjoyed serving others and working on projects in the Fredonia community. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, the Fredonia Lion’s Club, and the Fredonia Arts Council.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fredonia First United Methodist Church or the Fredonia Arts Council and they can be left or mailed to Wickham Family Funeral Home. 510 North 7th, Fredonia, Kansas 66736.
Friends may sign the register book from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M., Sunday, June 28, 2020 at Wickham Family Funeral Home.
There will be a private graveside service. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
