Georgia Ruth Cox
Georgia Ruth Tucker Cox, a longtime merchant and resident of Cherryvale, KS, died at Eagle Estates in Independence, KS on January 15, 2018 at the age of 105 years. She was born on August 24, 1912. In May 1934, Ruth married Oscar Allen Cox from Branson, MO. They were married 67 years until his death in 2002.
Raised in Hooker, OK, Ruth was a member of the pioneering Tucker family who participated in the Oklahoma Panhandle land rush. In her lifetime, she went from riding a horse to grade school to flying jets to Europe. Ruth and her identical twin sister, Mattie Ruby Harris, were registered nurses, graduating from Bell Memorial Hospital in Kansas City, KS which is now Kansas University Medical Center. In another pioneering event, the twins were welders on Navy destroyers at Kaiser Shipyards (Portland, OR) in World War II.
Ruth and her husband, Oscar, established the Cox Variety Store in 1947 in Cherryvale, operating that store until 1975.
Survivors include daughters, Ada Sue Hinshaw of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Georgianna Kay Rail and her husband, Dale of Cherryvale, Kansas, grandchildren, Cynthia Lynn Stark and her husband Glenn, Scott Allen Hinshaw and his wife Kirsten, Travis Rail and his wife Brittany, Skyler Rail, Nathan Rail and his wife Brittany and 7 great grandchildren.
Friends may greet the family from 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 20, 2018 at New Hope Christian Church with Funeral services being held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 20, 2018 at New Hope Christian Church (908 E. 4th St., Cherryvale, KS), officiated by Gerald Zuck, Pastor. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale
Memorial remembrances are suggested to the Tucker Twin Scholarship School of nursing at Kansas University Medical Center and they may be let or mailed to Wickham Family Funeral Home, 216 East 4th, Cherryvale, Kansas 67335.
