Bernadine Pound
Bernadine Key was born January 31, 1942, in Fredonia, Kansas. She was the seventh child of 13, born to Ralph Key and Aline Scannel Key of rural Fredonia.
Bernadine grew up on the family farm south of Fredonia and attended the Fredonia school system, including the former Butts School and as well, the old Mound School.
In 1960, she married Robert Pound of Fredonia, and they later divorced in 1970.
She was mother to five children, Connie, Rhonda, Renee, Tonya, Garrett and one grandson, Justin whom grew up under her care.
Bernadine loved spending time with her family. Anytime was a good time to get together! Sometime around the early 80’s, she became known as, “Grandma Red”, thanks in part to her lovely auburn hair and teasing imaginations of her grandsons. She always made her grandkids feel special and she was dearly loved by them. Something she enjoyed was finding unique and memorable ways to make a kid laugh! She particularly enjoyed playing games and telling funny stories to her grandchildren and later, the great grandchildren, when they were young, and she formed bonds with each of them at one time or another, and she was always a popular and well loved by them in return.
She loved listening to old school country music. Loretta Lynn was among her favorites.
She also loved playing Pitch! Pitch was played for many generations in the Key family, and there were always people willing to play! Nothing brought her more pleasure than kicking someone's butt badly during a game of Pitch, and she kicked one and all at various times of her life.!
She was an excellent cook and loved gathering Pecans in the fall. She was a huge figure in the lives of her children and grandchildren and she will be lovingly remembered and always missed.
