Amber Hughes of Thayer, passed away on August 7, 2023, in Chanute, Kansas.


Amber Jaedeane Hughes was born June 22, 1981, to John (Jack) Hughes and Brenda (Kegerries) Hughes in Chanute, Kansas. Amber graduated from Chanute High School and went on to earn a bachelor of science in psychology and legal issues from Pittsburg State University and a master’s in social work from Missouri State University.


Amber was a great animal lover, loved the Chiefs, her nieces and nephew, and watching her niece, Kori play basketball. She loved to read and listen to music. Amber was also an organ donor upon her death and was able to donate several lifesaving organs for others.


Amber was preceded in death by her father John Hughes and her grandparents, Ward Hughes, Lillian Hughes Leighty, Pearl, and John West, and Raymond Kegerries.


Amber leaves behind her mother, Brenda Hughes, Thayer, a sister, Candi Babcock (Todd) of Thayer, a brother, David Hughes, Olathe, a brother Robert Hughes, Olathe, a brother, Kevin Hughes, Florida, a brother John Hughes, Paola, a sister Theresa Tyrkala of Florida. She also leaves behind her nephew Peyton Babcock, Emporia, Kori Babcock, Thayer, Morgan Babcock, Thayer, Kyndal Grace Hughes, Olathe, Ava Hughes of Topeka, John Mitchell Hughes of Missouri, Wendy Tyrkala and Whitney Tyrkala of Florida, Daniel Hughes of Kansas and Brian Hughes of Kansas.


One aunt, Cathy Brunk of Ft. Worth, TX, one aunt, Debbie Allen (Randy) of Nevada, MO, and one aunt, Sandy McGatha (David) of El Dorado Springs, MO. As well as very special lifelong friends, Stephen and Brandon McCullough-Hembree, Baxter Springs, and Joe Hutchinson, Chanute. And last but not least, a loyal and heartbroken dachshund/basset hound, Sammy Dean.


Per her request, Amber will be cremated and laid to rest with her father at Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute, Kansas. A graveside service is scheduled for Wednesday, August 16th at 10:30. Arrangements and cremation are being handled by Wickham Funeral Home of Chanute.
