WILMA WAYDENE BENNINGWilma W. Benning, 93, of Cherryvale, Kansas passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Independence.Wilma Waydene Benning was born July 19, 1921 in rural Coffeyville, Kansas the daughter of Hugh Lasley and Edith (Harrison) Lasley. She attended McKennon Grade School, Valeda High School where she was a member of the Women"s Basketball team in 1935 and she later graduated from Altamont High School in 1938.On January 15, 1946 in Coffeyville, Kansas she was united in marriage to Martin Benning and he preceded her in death February 7, 1998. She lived in Liberty until the death of Martin and moved to Cherryvale in 1999.Wilma worked for Southwestern Bell in her earlier years as an operator and later in life was a homemaker. She loved quilting, gardening, canning and made the best Lime pickles you would ever have.She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and Altar Society, Progressive EHU, active in both Liberty and Cherryvale Senior Citizens Clubs.Survivors include son, David Benning and his wife Rexanne of Liberty, Kansas, daughter, Carol Staton and her husband Barry of Cherryvale, Kansas, five grandchildren, Marty Benning of Edmond, Oklahoma, Dustin Benning of Chanute, Kansas, Mark Staton of Cherryvale, Kansas Rebekah Benning of Coffeyville, Kansas, David Staton of Manhattan, Kansas and six great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Lee Lasley and sister, Faye Robinson.Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 13, 2015 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Cherryvale, Kansas with Reverend Andrew Heiman, celebrant.Reciting of the Rosary will be held 7:00 P.M. Sunday, April 12, 2015 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Friends may sign the register book from 12Noon until 5:00 P.M. Sunday at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 216 East 4th, Cherryvale, Kansas.Interment will be held in All Saints Cemetery in Liberty, Kansas.Memorial remembrances are suggested to the Cherryvale Alumni Association or St. Francis Xavier Altar Society and they may be left or mailed to the funeral home.
