Wanda A. McElwain, 88, a resident of Elk City, Kansas, died Sunday, October 15, 2006 at the Regal Estates Nursing Center in Independence, Kansas. She was born April 17, 1918 in Elk City, the daughter of Bert B. and Dora (Mitchell) Foster. She was a graduate of Elk City High School and attended beauty school. She was a beauty operator for a few years. Later in life, she became a certified nurses aide and worked at Fredonia Regional Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Independence. On November 14, 1940 in Independence, she married John Delbert McElwain. He preceded her in death September 11, 1971. She was a past member of Eastern Star and attended the First Christian Church in Elk City. Her hobbies included knitting and traveling. She also helped with many senior citizen dinners. Her Survivors include: Four Daughters Jean McLaughlin of Menifee, CA Jan Imler of Elden, MO Genneth Moon of Topeka, KS Judy Skipper of Whitesburg, GA Two Sons Jim McElwain of Burden, KS John McElwain of Elk City, KS Two Sisters Lavelle Groundwater of Temecula, CA Treva Fehr of Topeka, KS 17 Grandchildren; 28 Great Grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Wanda Marie and Twila Loraine; three grandsons; four brothers and two sisters. Cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial service will be held at 10:30A.M. on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at the Oak Hill Cemetery near Elk City. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials donations be made in her name with the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association, and may be sent to the funeral home.
