Shirley Mae Logan

February 15, 1935 — November 23, 2021

It is with great sadness that our beloved mother, Shirley Mae Logan, passed away at Labette Health Hospital on November 23, 2021 due to complications of Covid-19. Born in Cherryvale, Kansas as the 2nd of 4 children to Eva and Warden Hills, she was 86 years old when she earned her wings and will join her parents, only brother Mike Hills and older sister Billie June Ragan, who all preceded her in death.

Her first and foremost purpose was being the mother of 7 children who kept her more than a little busy and more frazzled than most knew. In order to help support this large brood of children, she worked in numerous areas of employment which included waitressing, real estate and working for a department store in their deli and beauty departments. She and our dad even opened up a bar and restaurant in Vinita, Oklahoma called the “Chaparelle” where they served up whatever the customers brought in as their “drink of the night.” Many would stay into the wee hours of the night playing pool or just chatting with friends.

She had a passion for fishing but her love was the huge vegetable garden she would plant and tend to each year. Even when her doctor would tell her she needed to slow down a bit, you would find her outside picking weeds, watering and babying all those vegetables. She was known in town to sell her crop of tomatoes, cucumbers, corn and watermelon and many other vegetables at the end of her driveway every year. Many people would approach her in the local grocery and department stores asking when she would be selling the next seasons’ vegetables. She was also a fantastic cook and made delicious Chicken Kiev; but oh my, her homemade Cinnamon Roles were the BEST!

Once the kids started leaving the nest, she decided to join our dad on his long-haul work trips in the diesel truck where they traveled all over the states. They made those trips fun by meeting and making many friends along the way. You would (on more than one occasion) get a call from her excited about winning a fair amount gambling in Las Vegas when they had a delivery in that area. This was one of mom’s favorite vacation spots and she was actually pretty lucky at it.

But if you really knew our mom these last few years, you would know her pride and joy was her adorable rescued dog, Dancer. Mom said that little dog would be shaking and stomping around like she was dancing so what better name for her than Dancer. Each and every in-person or phone conversation you had with her would include the most recent escapades of her baby Dancer.

Our mom is survived by all 7 children (and spouses): Victoria Logan-Fielding, Paula Logan-Romero (Sonny), Melody Holladay, Michael Morrow (Debra), all who reside in California. Carla Roach and Kelly Brocaw who reside in Kansas and Thomas Clark Logan, Jr. who resides in Oklahoma, younger sister, Loretta Koscelny of Delaware, Oklahoma She is also survived by 41 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
