Robert, “Bob” Joe Compton, 93, long time resident of LaFontaine, Kansas, passed away Monday, January 16, 2023, at his home.
Bob was born May 22, 1929, to Clarence Arthur and Dorothy Mae Clemans Compton in Alva, Oklahoma.
Bob was a Korean War Veteran having served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954 when he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
On July 6, 1952, Bob was united in marriage to Mary C. Troutman, she preceded him in death March 12, 2019. To this union were born four children, Sherrie, Teresa, Marcia and Craig.
In addition to farming, Bob was the Postmaster in LaFontaine, Kansas and school bus driver. Bob was active in the LaFontaine Christian Church, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Elder and treasurer. He belonged to the NFO Farm Organization, was a Rural Water District #1 board member, served on the Labor Crew at the Elk City Reservoir, was a Lifetime member of the VFW and served on the board at the Fredonia Co-op.
Bob is survived by his children; Sherrie Steele, LaFontaine, Kansas, Teresa Compton, Fredonia, Kansas, Marcia (Ed) Cline, Fredonia, Kansas and Craig Compton, LaFontaine, Kansas, brothers; Ben (Marilyn) Compton, Fredonia, Kansas, Dan Compton, Manhattan, Kansas, sisters-in-law, Nadine Compton, Fredonia, Kansas, Nancy Compton, Daytona, Florida, brother-in-law, Don Walters, Columbia, Missouri, grandchildren; Kevan (Shala) Steele, Kristin Cline, Kendall Cline, Amber Gregory, Amber (Jay) Bair, Great Grandchildren; Ciera (Kody) Seaboldt, Wyatt Perry, Calle Perry, Dillon Steele, Kinley Steele, Jaydon Cline, Hadley Cline, Tia Gregory, Tucker Gregory and Great-Great Grandchild; Kash Seaboldt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary, brothers, Jerry and Bill Compton, and sisters-in-law, Betty Lu Compton and Shirley Walters.
Celebration of Life Services will be held Monday, January 23, 2023, at 10:30 am at the Fredonia First Christian Church, 303 N. 7th Fredonia, Kansas.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 22, 2023, from 3:00pm -5:00pm at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 510 N. 7th Fredonia, Kansas.
Memorials are suggested to Fredonia Flag Fund or Old Iron Club and may be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
