Merima Short Carver

Merima Short Carver, 96, a longtime resident of the Altoona and Fredonia, Kansas area, died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Clare Bridge of Wichita. She was born May 3, 1918 in Guilford, Kansas, the daughter of Herschel and Pearl (Orendorff) Short. Merima was a graduate of Benedict High School and earned her bachelor"s and master"s degrees from Pittsburg State University. She was an educator and school counselor, working in Dunn Elementary School 1937-1938; Buffville Elementary School 1938-1943; and retired from Fredonia USD 484 in 1982 after 24 " years of service. On May 1, 1938 in Guilford, Kansas, Merima was united in marriage to Howard N. Carver. He preceded her in death February 16, 1986. Merima was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia; a charter member of Altoona Days; a vacation bible leader at Altoona Methodist Church; and a member of the Business and Professional Women"s organization, where she served as president in 1972-73. She received the DAR Award for Distinguished Conservationist in 1991. Merima"s survivors include: Children: Ron (Jane) Carver of Fredonia, KS Charles (Bonnie) Carver of Wichita, KS Shelda (Terry) Burger of Salina, KS Son-in-law: John Shaffer of Salina, KS Sisters-in-law: Evelyn Short of Fredonia, KS Mary Carver of Salida, CO 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and many loved nieces and nephews. Her parents, Herschel and Pearl Short; daughter, Terry Mae Shaffer; sisters, Temperance Campbell, Queenbee Cook, Sunny Erickson and Beebee Callaway; and brother, Sterling Short also preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia with Mike Myers officiating. A visitation has been scheduled prior to the funeral on Tuesday, 10:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M. at the church. Burial will be in the Altoona Cemetery. Memorials have been established in Merima"s name with USD 484 Educational Fund and First United Methodist Church in Fredonia and contributions can be sent to or left with Timmons Funeral Home.
