Lopez, 62, of Cherryvale, KS, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2015 from the injuries of a motorcycle accident on 169 Highway near Chanute, KS.Mario David Lopez was born August 2, 1953 in Independence, Kansas the son of Frank Roman Lopez and Mary (Ortega) Lopez. He grew up in Independence and graduated from Independence High School in 1971. He graduated from Independence Community College and later from Pittsburg State University with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Drafting.On August of 1972 in Independence he was united in marriage to Celeste Hedge and they later divorced. He was later united in marriage in Independence on June 2, 1990 to Jo Ann Lickteig and she survives at the home.Mario worked at Independence Community College as Director of Operations until 2013 and later worked for Coffeyville Community College in maintenance and grounds keeping until he retired in January of this year (2015).His favorite hobbies were riding motorcycles, Facebook, movies, music, computers, golf and fishing. Mario will be remembered for his love of his family, sense of humor, as an easy going people person and his beaming smile.Mario was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and Cherryvale Main Street. He was active with the church helping with Saturday Night Bingo and served as secretary and district deputy for the Knights of Columbus among many other duties.Survivors include his wife Jo Ann of the home, children, Angelina Marie Lopez of Washington D.C., Catherine Rose Hernandez of Charleston, South Carolina, Michael Joseph Lopez of Tulsa, Oklahoma, James "Tuey" Raphael Hernandez of Eudora, Kansas, Nicholas Patrick Hernandez of Pittsburg, Kansas, Roman Mario Lopez of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma, sisters, Mary Ann Baldassaro of Independence, Kansas, Frances "Zeke" Lickteig of Cherryvale, Kansas, Marta Brown of Independence, Kansas, brothers, Mark Lopez and Adam Lopez of Independence, Kansas and six grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents.Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:00 A.M., Friday, August 21, 2015 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Andrew Heiman, celebrant. The casket will be closed.Reciting of the Rosary will be held 7:00 P.M., Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.Friends may sign the register book from 12:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M., Thursday at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 216 East 4th, Cherryvale, KS.Interment will be held immediately following the mass at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.Memorial remembrances are suggested to AWOL and they may be left or mailed to the funeral home.
