John A. Ong

John Alan Ong, 85, a longtime resident of Fredonia, Kansas, died at his home on Thursday evening, November 5, 2009. He was born October 3, 1924 in Madison, Kansas, the son of William and Marguerite (Kennedy) Ong. He was a graduate of Fredonia High School. John served as a sergeant in the United States Army in the 24th Division, 19th Infantry, Cannon Company from February 12, 1943 to January 17, 1946 at the Pacific Theatre of Operations. While in action, he was wounded twice. He was awarded the bronze arrowhead, Philippine Liberation ribbon with two bronze service stars, ATCM APTC ribbon with three bronze service stars and the Purple Heart with one oak leaf cluster. On January 29, 1950 in Fredonia, he married Dolores Ann Barron. She preceded him in death on July 6, 2007. John was a rural mail carrier for 32 years, where he was known for going far beyond rain, sleet and snow to deliver the mail on his route. John was a member of the First Christian Church in Fredonia, VFW Post #3018 and Fredonia American Legion. His activities included part-time carpenter, golfer and fisherman, but he excelled most at being a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. John"s survivors include: One daughter and son-in-law: Gerrianne & Pat Tubach of Fredonia, Kansas One daughter-in-law: Jackie Ong of Fall River, Kansas Five grandchildren: Travis Falstad Tanner Ong Tara Arnold Nate Tubach Ally Tubach He was preceded in death by his son, Dan Ong and one brother, Bill Ong. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the First Christian Church in Fredonia with Rev. Gene Benefiel officiating. Burial will be in the Fredonia City Cemetery with military rites provided by the U.S. Army. Visitation at Timmons Funeral Home will be Monday, 2:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M., with the family receiving friends 6:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. A memorial has been established in John"s name with the Avenue of Flags or the Fredonia Flag Fund and may be sent to the funeral home. Words of condolence for the family may be left on this website.
