Herbert H. Jabben, 82, born February 18, 1932, of Olathe, KS, formerly of Independence, KS, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014." He was born to Carl S. and Theda (Hinrich) Jabben on a farm near Jefferson, KS, the fifth of thirteen siblings." He attended Springdale Rural and Zion Lutheran elementary schools, and graduated from Independence High School in 1950.Herbert served in the Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean War." After the war, he worked at Boeing for nine months, then attended Independence Community Junior College and completed his electrical engineering degree at Kansas State University in 1959." In 1957, he married Shirley Irene Greer." Upon graduation, they moved from Manhattan, KS to Wichita, KS, where Herbert worked for Boeing until 1969." In 1970, he began a second career at Atlantic Richfield Oil Company." He retired from Arco in 1985.Herbert and Shirley have two children, Eleanor (David) Lee and Kurtis Jabben, both of Olathe, KS." They have four grandchildren, Zachary Lee (Philadelphia, PA), Lauren Lee (Waco, TX), Natalie Jabben and Jess Jabben, both of Olathe.Herbert is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and ten of his siblings, Louis Jabben, Pittsburg, KS, Wilma Squire, Odessa, TX, Lydia (Al) Wells, Las Cruces, NM, Frieda Walker, Humble, TX, Mary (Chris) Robinson, Parsons, KS, Ellie Culp, Independence, Carl Jabben, Wichita, KS, Evelyn (Larry) Clover, Sycamore, KS, Marilyn (Larry) Kemp, Neodesha, KS, and Carolyn (Jim) Sullivan, Independence." He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Hilda Fisher and Helen (Bob) Wright.Herbert spent his retirement years pursuing his beloved hobby, gardening." He enjoyed his clientele at various farmers" markets in the area." He became recommitted to his faith in Christ through the influence of small group Bible studies and mentoring by the Navigators, a Christian organization, in Wichita, KS." He was an ardent Bible student, and believed strongly in the value of memorizing Scripture." Herbert and Shirley recently relocated to Olathe, KS to be closer to their children and grandchildren." Donations in Herbert"s memory may be made to Zion Lutheran Church and School, or to the Navigators, Colorado Springs, CO and they may be left or mailed to Wickham Family Funeral Home, 216 E. 4th Street, Cherryvale, Kansas 67335.Services will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 with family burial at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence and a memorial service at Zion Lutheran Church, 219 S. 10th Street, Independence at 1:30 p.m." The family will greet friends at the church after the service.
