Garold "Jim" Max Spoon

Garold Max "Jim" Spoon, 78, a lifelong resident of Wilson County, Kansas, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at Fredonia Regional Hospital. He was born October 31, 1931 in Fall River, Kansas, the son of Lester and Alfreda (Crawshaw) Spoon. Jim was a 1949 graduate of Fredonia High School. He served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps 1951-1953, where he was a tank commander during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #3018 in Fredonia. For 40 years, Jim worked at General Portland/Lafarge Cement Plant in Fredonia, retiring in 1994 as the store room clerk. He also owned and operated J&S Body Shop where he worked on many vehicles and was especially fond of the 1953, 1954 and 1956 Ford trucks he customized for himself. On May 27, 1954 in Fredonia, he married Shirley Cunningham. They recently celebrated 55 years of marriage. She survives at their home. Survivors, in addition to his wife, Shirley, include: One son: Gary Spoon & his wife, Sharron of Fredonia, KS One daughter: Sandra "Kate" Dunn & her husband, Steve of Fredonia, KS One sister: Lois Matlock & her husband, Don of Webb City, MO Seven grandchildren: Kris Spoon, Greg Spoon, Kerri Spoon, Paige Quesada, Amanda Dunn, Evan Dunn and Logan Dunn Eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bob Spoon and Dwaine Spoon. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Timmons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gene Benefiel of the Buxton Christian Church officiating. The family will receive friends 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. on Friday evening. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Jim"s name with the Avenue of Flags or the Parkinson"s Foundation and may be sent to the funeral home.
