"Doris Elene (Baker) CoatsDoris E. (Baker) Coats, 85, of Cherryvale, KS, passed from this life on Sunday, March 2, 2014, after a lengthy battle with diabetes and heart disease.Doris was the daughter of Lewis E. Baker and Ida L. (Swager) Baker, and she was born on February 28, 1929, at their home in Plattsburg, MO. She attended school in Thayer, KS, and later graduated from Ault High School, Ault, Colorado, in 1949, and she later attended the Denver Business School. On Sept. 1, 1950, Doris married the love of her life Gerald J. Coats in Greeley, Colorado.Doris was well known for her passion of baking and cake decorating, but she possessed many other talents as well. She stayed active with family, church, and community functions. She served as Boy Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, church deaconess, choir and soloist and was active in the 4-H Club along with numerous civic organizations." She served on the board of the Kansas Wheat Commission and was the recipient of numerous awards for her bread baking. She spent much of her working career as a cook, baker, and cake decorator. She and Gerald were the owners of the Dandy Donut Shop in Cherryvale from 1978 until retirement in 1990.Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gerald (1998), her son Bruce D. Coats of Chanute (2012), five older brothers, and two younger sisters.Doris is survived by daughter Cathi D. (Coats) Spencer and husband John of Jay, OK; daughter Karen (Coats) Holloway of Cherryvale; daughter-in-law Cathy (Courtenay) Coats of Raleigh, North Carolina; sister Vi Clampitt and husband Clayton of Cherryvale; five granddaughters, one grandson, five great-granddaughters, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 7, 2014 at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 216 East 4th Street, Cherryvale, Kansas.Memorial remembrances are suggested to the Happy Hustlers 4-H Club and they may be left or mailed to Wickham Family Funeral Home.
