Bytha Louise Buchanan, 93, a resident of Independence, Kansas, formerly of New Albany, Kansas, died Friday, March 9, 2007 in Independence, Kansas. She was born January 20, 1914 in New Albany, the daughter of James and Effie (Joy) Laughlin. She was a graduate of New Albany High School. She was a homemaker. She married Paul Scott in 1944. He preceded her in death in 1977. In 1979, she married Cecil Atwell. He preceded her in death in 1986. In 1988, she married Weldon Buchanan. He survives in Independence. She was a longtime member of the New Albany United Methodist Church. She served on the New Albany City Council for 20 years, 17 as treasurer and 3 as council woman. She and Weldon enjoyed spending a lot of time at Havana Lake fishing. Survivors, in addition to her husband, Weldon, include: Two Sons: Gary Scott of Thayer, KS Terry Scott of Independence, KS 4 Step-Children: Jeanette Bowers of Elk City, KS Cecil Buchanan of Independence, KS Allan Buchanan of Neodesha, KS John Buchanan of Alta Vista, KS Three Grandchildren and Four Great Grandchildren Seven Step Grandchildren and Seven Step Great Grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lucille Robertson; one step-son, Roland Scott; one step grandson, Scott Jason Buchanan Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, March 12, 2007 at the Timmons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Willie Jones of the Grace Memorial United Methodist Church in Independence officiating. Burial will be in the Weakley Cemetery, near New Albany. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, 11:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M. A memorial has been established in her name with the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and may be sent to the funeral home.
