Bruce Virgil Schroder

Bruce Virgil Schroder, 84, lifelong resident of Fredonia, Kansas, died Sunday, August 10, 2008 at Fredonia Regional Hospital in Fredonia, Kansas. He was born May 18, 1924 in Fredonia, the son of Glenn and Vesta (Fulk) Schroder. He was a 1942 graduate of Fredonia High School and was the captain of the FHS 1942 State Basketball Championship Team. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a radio operator on a salvage ship in the South Pacific. On April 21, 1946 in Fredonia, he married Ruth Brinegar, his wife of 62 years. She survives at their home. Following his Navy service, he was a business partner with his brother-in-law, Gene Brinegar in the Skelly Gas Station at the corner of 4th and Madison in Fredonia. In 1947, he went into the plumbing business with his dad and continued plumbing for 60 years, until his retirement in October of 2007. He also owned Schroder Furniture Store in Fredonia for 20 years. Bruce was a member of the First Christian Church in Fredonia. He served as a volunteer for the Fredonia Fire Department for 38 years, retiring in 1995. He served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church for many years and was a member of the V.F.W. In addition to his wife, Ruth, Bruce is survived by: Two sons: Jim Schroder of Springfield, Illinois Byron Schroder of Fredonia, Kansas Two daughters: Pat Sharp and fianc" Mike Casteel of Fredonia, Kansas Penny and Gary Selves of Wichita, Kansas One sister: Lois & Jim Rozell of Springfield, Missouri Five grandchildren: Dr. Alanna Temple of West Plains, Missouri Alyssa Sims of Fredonia, Kansas Alaura Sharp of Lamar, Colorado Breanne Selves of Wichita, Kansas Tyler Selves of Wichita, Kansas Two great grandchildren: Zoey Sims and L.J. Temple He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Vesta Schroder and his half brother, Douglas Taylor. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Fredonia with Carl Thornton officiating. Burial will be in the Fredonia City Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, August 11 at the Timmons Funeral Home from 2:00 P.M - 7:00 P.M with the family receiving friends 5:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M. A memorial has been established in his name with the First Christian Church and may be sent to the funeral home. Family condolences may be left on this website.
